Basic Windows Tutorials and Tips.

These techniques will work for most programs, Windows Explorer, Picasa etc.

How to select a range of items (files, icons, images etc) using the Shift key on your keyboard.

  1. Click the first item of the range you wish to select.
  2. Press and hold down the Shift key on your keyboard.
  3. Click the last item in your range.
  4. Release the shift key.

Everything between the first item and the last item you clicked should now be highlighted (selected).
Any action you perform now will be applied to all seleted items. ie. Delete, Copy, Move etc.

How to select multiple items (files, icons, images etc) using the Control key (Ctrl key on your keyboard)

  1. Click the first you wish to select.
  2. Press and hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard.
  3. Click the next item you wish to select.
  4. Both items will now be selected or highlighted.
  5. Repeat steps 2 and 3 as many times as necessary to select more items.
  6. Release the Ctrl key.

Any action you perform now will be applied to all seleted items. ie. Delete, Copy, Move etc.

Combine both techniques.

Occasionally you will need to perform an action (Delete, Copy, Move etc) on all items except a few.
For example, you have a folder containing a hundred image files and would like to move them all except 5 files to a different folder.
You could select them all (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl a) and paste them (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl v) in the new folder, then while holding down the Ctrl key, select the 5 images that shouldn’t be there, cut them (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl x), then paste those 5 files (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl v) back to the original folder. That would work fine but there is an easier way.

  1. Select All files (Ctrl a).
  2. Press and hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard.
  3. Click the 5 items you wish to de-select.
  4. All files except the 5 you just de-selected in step 4 should now be highlighted (selected).
  5. You can now move the selected files to your new folder by cutting the selected images (Ctrl x) and pasting into your new folder (Ctrl v). The 5 files you de-selected earlier will remain in the original folder.
